Are You Alright?
After last week, a lot of us are reeling. It’s okay if you are, too.
Hey, there.
How you holding up?
Not great? You’re not alone.
There’s no use in pretending that last week was anything short of a major blow to our nation’s democracy.
The Supreme Court got rid of what was left (it was already in tatters after previous rulings, let’s be clear) of the Voting Rights Act. With a 6-3 ruling—and all of the liberal justices in dissent—the Roberts court completed a decades-long mission of the far right in our country.
There’s no use in pretending last week’s ruling didn’t represent one of the gravest and most consequential losses of our era.
But it wasn’t really Trump’s doing, at least not entirely. No, the conservative movement’s success rests more on the shoulders of George W. Bush (who appointed Roberts) and Mitch McConnell who effectively denied Obama a Supreme Court seat (now held by Neil Gorsuch). McConnell could have stopped this by convicting Donald Trump in 2020.
This is what he—and his racist cohort—have been aiming for since the passage of the Civil Rights Act itself.
Even with a Harris victory, this decision was heading to the Court. We can talk all day about how she would have been a better leader, but she couldn’t undo the history that has led to this disastrous moment for Black voters in this country.
It fucking sucks. And it’s a loss. A big one.
Grief is a completely acceptable and normal response to loss. But as with any loss, we have to move forward.
There’s no use in pretending that Roberts finally got his ultimate wish, something he’s been gunning for since his appointment.
The best way to move forward? Take the next logical step. We must do everything in our power to ensure a Democratic sweep of both chambers of Congress in the upcoming midterms in November and absolutely stomp the Republicans in 2028.
We can’t give up. And you wouldn’t be here if you were ready to hand our nation’s future over to these racist, homophobic, xenophobic, misogynistic, lying, kleptocratic goons.
We Need All Hands on Deck to Elect Graham Platner
Last week Janet Mills—current governor of Maine and once-presumed frontrunner in that state’s Democratic Senate primary—dropped out of the race.
Which of course now means that Graham Platner is running unopposed and he needs all of our support if he’s going to defeat Susan Collins in November.

We can’t afford to take any seats for granted, and this particular primary has taken up so much energy and oxygen on the left for one simple reason: Susan Collins is vulnerable.
She may carry the “moderate Republican” card with her, but she’s done almost nothing to break with Trump since he was elected for his second term. She’s supported the Iran War, ICE funding, and confirmed nearly all of his nominees.
Collins is no moderate and Mainers are increasingly seeing through her bullshit.

Support the Louisiana Democratic Party
The ink was barely dry on the SCOTUS decision before the Louisiana governor declared a state of emergency to give him the power to suspend an election (!!!!) and gerrymander the fuck out of the state’s Congressional maps.
We already knew this guy was a total piece of shit, but this is yet more proof that you can’t trust anyone in the GOP to run a lemonade stand, let alone a state.
There are several lawsuits pending including from Democratic candidates who were already running in primaries in previously-drawn districts.
From a local TV story:
“‘This is regression on steroids,” said Randal Gaines, chair of the Louisiana Democratic Party. ‘This court has consistently, consistently ruled against the interests of minorities, particularly African Americans. They have not taken action in the last five to 10 years to define the rights of minorities, to interpret the rights of minorities.’
The first lawsuit was filed by Lindsay Garcia, a Democratic candidate for the state’s fifth district.”
If you want to support the Party in its legal actions, donate via ActBlue here:

We have no intention of taking any of this lying down. We will be loud. We will be forceful.
The Trump administration is a fuckin mess. Together: We can—and will—beat the shit out of them in November.
In solidarity,
The Find Out Team

I am struggling. I appreciate how you explain what is happening in every day terms. I am saddened by people who don’t vote.
I, too, knew to expect this ruling. So I already had my tears and am propelled by righteous anger. In an unexpected way, this blow made me happy. Everyone expected this ruling to come early so the redistricting fight would happen before this year's primaries or on June 30th so the whiny baby justices who agreed to this monstrosity could run away on break. Instead they did it in the middle of primary season after Virginia's approved their new maps and after primary ballots had already been mailed and some even received in Louisiana. So obviously political and broken and chaotic and wrong. When I was a kid the Republican party said they stood for law and order. Now the leadership has shown they stand for super rich, super racist power. Sometimes things have to break badly so that even busy, checked out people have to spend the time and resources for a new upgrade instead of a crappy patch. We the people must reform our government at every level. Let's get to work!!
